Each summer, fragrance houses come out with summer editions of their most popular scents. Calvin Klein updates its Eternity franchise each April with beach-inspired packaging; Dolce & Gabbana offer their Mediterranean vacation scents; and Jean-Paul Gaultier dresses his Classique bottle in palm leaves and peacocks. Each is a little work of art.
But summer 2015 belongs to YSL’s spectacular Paris Premieres Roses Limited Edition scent. It’s a younger, fresher interpretation of the original eau de toilette scent boasting notes of wild rose, violet leaf, neroli, peony, lily-of-the-valley, white musk and sandalwood.
The packaging and bottle design are the brainchild of Japanese artist Que Houxo who studied at the Tama Art University in Tokyo.
He boasts an ultra-modern method of painting. He projects fluorescent painting on the walls, splashing flowers and using a specific light to reveal their intense colours.
It’s in effect, an explosion of fluorescent flowers dancing under UV lights. A handful of trend experts have identified Houxo as a rising star in the art world.
YSL Paris Premieres Roses Limited Edition arrives exclusively at Hudson’s Bay stores in Canada in mid-April.
I gave away one of these exquisite bottles to one lucky follower. Congrats to Sophie Marsolais! We drew her name at random from all the entries below.

April 9, 2015 at 7:29 amIve actually bought several scents based solely on the packaging! Most recently Kate Spade’s “Twirl”, because her packaging is always adorable… Unfortunately not a big fan of the scent though!

April 9, 2015 at 7:25 amI think everyone owns a bottle of Chanel No 5 for the iconic bottle right?
I remember falling in love with La Prarie perfume because it came in a raindrop bottle. So beautiful but impractical. The best kind of art.

April 9, 2015 at 7:19 amI buy based on the scent, not the bottle design. I have to admit that some bottles are very well designed and in some circumstances, be works of art

April 9, 2015 at 6:32 amYes I have bought many over the years.
I am looking at 2 different ones right now. One looks like a tightly wrapped flower with a leave. I have a set of 3 of them orange, green and blue. Never opened!
The other one is a clear plastic stand with blooming flower attached. Filled with a light orange, dark orange and yellow. Never opened!
Both were bought almost 20 yrs ago on a very special trip to the Bahamas.

April 9, 2015 at 5:59 amA beautiful bottle/packaging signifies presence!
It is the perfumer/designer only real way of telling people without words.
“This is who I am”
Well done !

April 9, 2015 at 5:41 amI love pretty perfume bottles and would love to display them, but the contents keep much better stored in the dark of their boxes. So no, I haven’t bought a fragrance simply for it’s bottle design, I’ve got to love the scent first.
