Artist/designer/creator Yaz Kurhan, better known in fashion circles as ‘Yazbukey’ is a whirlwind of creativity and energy. Meet her in person and you first notice how she carries herself: like a classic Bond femme fatale with a stunning sense of style and sleek humour. She’s part actress, part designer. Her Paris Fashion Week presentations have become a hot ticket as she features the same cast of characters each season with new personas and stories. Her Pop Art plexiglass accessories are hugely popular with the likes of Karl Lagerfeld, Dave Gahan, Madonna, Britney Spears and fashion stylists who love the bold colour and whimsy. Not only has she worked with shu uemura in the past, but has also collaborated with Lacoste,

 

Yaz was born in Istanbul in 1973 and studied Graphics and Industrial Design in Paris. She and her sister dreamt up the ‘Yazbukey’ brand drawing on their love of strong silhouettes and graphic accents. Her creative process is almost as famous as her collections: Each season she rips up her apartment and redecorates it from top-to-bottom using the theme for her next collection. “I need to live in the theme and emerse myself in the ideas in order to create,” she says. And please don’t call her work ‘accessories’. “I used to say ‘complement d’objet. Accessories make them sound secondary,” she told the New York Times. For years she has designed the accessories for Zac Posen’s Z Spoke line. Posen says her genius is in the ability to create the upmost chic item and incorporate a dash of humour into it. That is evident in this capsule collection for shu uemura’s new mattitude lipsticks. The Paris-based jewelry artist designed the lip print motifs and illustrations and worked with shu’s artistic director Uchiide to create the colours. She’s particularly excited with the magic metallic lip liners that add an artistic twist to your lip contour.
