A conversation with YSL Creative Director of Makeup, Tom Pecheux
Tom Pecheux is one of the world’s top makeup artists. He’s created trend-setting beauty looks from Fashion Weeks in Paris, Milan and New York for years. And now, as Creative Director of Makeup for YSL, he helps develop the colours and formulas for the Yves Saint Laurent Beauty collections. Even more exciting, he designs the makeup looks for the Saint Laurent ready-to-wear show in Paris each season. Here, he talks about creating the looks for the fall/winter 2018 runway show.
Dave: How would you describe the makeup look from the Fall/Winter 2018 YSL show?
Tom: Powerful. Ultra-feminine. Individual. The very definition of natural beauty. The eye makeup on some of the girls is there to dial up the power and femininity. These are women looking their best.
Dave: Where did you get your inspiration from? Any reference in particular?
Tom: It is basically just one look, the embellishment of oneself without transforming the person behind it. For this look, I have selected just the right products. First, Or Rouge Huile Voluptuese to prep the skin and Top Secrets Instant Moisture Glow to add luminosity. Then the new foundation Touche Eclat All-In-One Glow – my new favourite – for a perfected natural coverage. The lips are moisturized with Volupte Night Rehab Lip Mask. Finally, after curling the lashes, I have created a sophisticated, punk graphic eye look extended towards the outer corner of the eye with the Couture Chalks – Le Noir from the Fall Look 2018. Powerful cat eyes are brightened in the inner corners by a grey silver eyeshadow from the Couture Palette No. 1 Tuxedo.
Dave: Fall/Winter 2018 is all about a bold eye statement. Can you explain?
Tom: The eye statement on some of the girls is there to underline their individuality. It shows diversity within a group – natural makeup, or bold eye look. It all fits.
Dave: What is the must-have product for this Fall makeup look?
Tom: Definitely, the Couture Chalks from the Fall Look 2018.
Dave: What makes this a YSL signature look?
Tom: Whilst respecting women’s individuality, this look shows their beauty, at its best. It has all the power of the YSL woman.
YSL Fall Look 2018 is on counter now.
