Georgia May Jagger Q&A
Top model, musical royalty and aspiring photographer, Jagger steps in front of the camera as the face of the edgy new Mugler Angel Muse fragrance.
Georgia May Jagger just may be the most polite supermodel on the planet. Read any interview with the daughter of Rolling Stones’ front man Mick Jagger and model Jerry Hall and the first fact you learn is she has impeccable manners. “I remember meeting her and her mom years ago when I worked for Chantecaille in London,” says celebrity makeup artist Nina Westbury. “They were both so sweet. Jerry loved the NARS brand at the time.” Georgia May certainly learned a healthy work ethic from her parents balancing a full modelling career with studies in photography and fine art. She kindly spoke about her new campaign for Mugler Angel as the face of MUSE, a vetiver gourmand containing notes of grapefruit, pink berries, hazelnut cream, patchoui and vetiver.
Georgia May Jagger: The Interview
Dave Lackie: You’ve had a remarkable career so far. What has been the highlight so far?
Georgia May Jagger: Walking in the closing ceremony of the Olympics was definitely a very special moment and becoming the face of Angel fragrance and working with the Mugler team has been a great experience. Thierry Mugler is an incredibly talented designer and visionary. It’s a huge honour to be included in his world and to follow in the footsteps of my mother.
D.L.: What fragrances do you love most?
GMJ: I like that the fragrance is multi-layered and that there is a combination of sweet sugary notes and patchouli
D.L.: Describe a typical day in your life.
GMJ: My days can really vary depending if I am working or not. On a workday I may be travelling to a shoot overnight or it could involve a very early flight or Eurostar and a long shoot day ahead but I always appreciate working with amazing teams of creative people wherever I am in the world. I always try to immerse myself in the local culture whenever possible too. I do travel quite a lot but when I’m home in London I try to sleep in as long as I can when I have a day off!
D.L.: I read that you are an aspiring photographer.
GMJ: I like photography and I studied it for a while. It’s something I would like to do more of in the future and I have been lucky enough to take some photos on some of the shoots I have worked on which has been fun. I got to take pictures of my mum in one of the Sunglass Hut campaigns we did together and I also recently did some self-portrait images for a Disney exhibition.
D.L.: What is it about Grace Jones that you love most as a model and performer?
GMJ: I think she is has an amazing presence and is very talented.
D.L.: You are the face of the new Mugler Angel fragrance Muse. What was it like shooting the campaign?
GMJ: It was a great experience. The most exciting part for me was getting to wear all of these beautiful things that I had seen photos and videos of all of my life like the steel corset. It was amazing to have access to these iconic pieces of design.
D.L.: What cities to you most love to photograph?
GMJ: London is my favourite city. It’s where I grew up and where I call home but there are so many great cities around the world to take pictures. It’s easy to get inspiration in places such as Japan and India.
D.L.: What are your memories of your mother (Jerry Hall) modelling for Thierry Mugler?
GMJ: The photo of the campaign my mum did for Angel in the desert was always hanging in her bathroom above her bath so that is really my first memory of her modelling. She looked like a mermaid. I also saw the shows she did for Thierry which looked a lot of fun and much more theatrical than they generally are today!
D.L.: What are your favourite flowers?
GMJ:I love peonies and roses.
D.L.: What is your favourite classic Hollywood film?
GMJ: It’s hard to pick just one but I always like to watch the old Mae West films
D.L.: Who is the most interesting person you’ve ever sat beside at a dinner?
GMJ: I have been fortunate enough to have had the pleasure of dining with many interesting people but I find Vivienne Westwood to be a huge inspiration.
D.L.: What is your favourite book?
GMJ: I don’t really have a favourite one but my younger brother always gives me good books as gifts.
D.L.: What restaurant or club would you wear Muse to?
GMJ: Sexy Fish in London. There’s a big mermaid on the wall and there is an assortment of colours, textures and flavours. You can’t help but enjoy it…
