Ask any dermatologist or doctor and he or she will tell you there is no such thing as a healthy tan. The skin responds to damage from UV rays with melanin deepening the colour of our skin. This can eventually lead to skin cancer. I’ve had basal cell carcinoma and I can tell you it isn’t fun. Thank goodness that we now have truly great bronzing powders that can recreate that sun-kissed look without risking skin health. One of my favourites is Chanel’s Healthy Glow Sun-Kissed Powder. Have you ever wondered how your nose identifies and registers your favourite fragrances? Here’s a little scientific explanation that you might find interesting. When you inhale a fragrance, scent molecules travel through your nasal passages to two tiny patches of tissue located behind the bridge of your nose. These patches are comprised of millions of special smelling sensors that connect directly to the brain. Each olfactory detecting neuron has one odor receptor. When you inhale and draw in microscopic odor molecules like your favourite fragrance, these stimulate the receptors. What’s interesting is the odor molecules dissolve in moisture and bind to tiny nerve hairs on the cells. Once the neurons detect the molecules, they send messages to your brain, which quickly identifies the smell. Any given molecule may stimulate a combination of receptors, creating a unique representation in the brain. It is the limbic system, our emotional centre, that is largely devoted to smell. So you can see why scent is so closely related to emotion. #davelackiebeauty #howwesmell #howwesmellperfume

So fun answering CHCH Morning Live viewer questions about fragrance with @simonegavros this morning. Here are some interesting facts and tips. Canada remains a very important country globally for fragrance sales with impressive year-over-year sales the past six years. Yet, fragrance today is expensive. (The retail price has almost doubled in five years.) So you want to enjoy every single drop in the bottles you buy.

Question: How do you best store fragrance?
Dave: You want to keep your fragrances in a cool, dark place. The biggest threats to fragrance are heat, sunlight and oxygen. A hall closet, away from the bathroom which can have temperature swings, is the best location. You can even store them upside down in the boxes they came in. This prevents the rubber seal at the top from drying out and cracking.

UV rays will cause the botanical ingredients to oxidize and spoil faster. (Oxidation is a chemical reaction that occurs when sensitive aromatic compounds in perfume react with oxygen in the air. It’s much like an apple that turns brown when cut.)
Never display your fragrances in direct sunlight. It can shorten the lifespan of a fragrance by 20%. That’s because UV rays speed up the chemical reactions in perfume accelerating the oxidative breakdown of the perfume.

Q: Can you store fragrance in your fridge?
Dave: Yes, you can store fragrance in the fridge. The consistent cooler temps and dark keep fragrances fresher, longer. When I visited fragrance labs in France, they stored their prototypes in the fridge.

Q: Can you keep perfume in the freezer?
D: No, Don’t keep it in the freezer. May affect some of the botanical ingredients

Q: How long does a fragrance last?
A: Typically, they will last 12 months to 24 months once opened if they are kept in cool, dark locations.
Yes, fragrances have expiry dates. Usually it is 12 months after you open the package.
Look for a symbol of an open jar on the box. This shows how many months it will last once opened. After the 12 to 24 months, the fragrance slowly declines
