For Autumn 2016, YSL’s Lloyd Simmonds is in a scandalous mood. The Creative Director of YSL Makeup has just launched an edgy fall makeup collection for the famed French Fashion House full of innovative makeup and statement-worthy colour.

“Inject makeup with a little fun. Keep it intriguing. Never be afraid of contrast,” recommends Simmonds when asked about modern fall makeup looks. He starts his look with the Couture Palette Collector Scandal Collection. The cover the palette mimics the mood of the fashion collections: a sumptuous dark green leather with the UYSL cassandre logo laser-cut in orange satin. Inside is a clash of colour: shocking burgundy, vintage green, and daring nude. The inspiration for the colours comes from the scandalous mood of the 1970s when Saint Laurent was at his peak.

“I love the unusual colour combinations found in fashion in the 1970s, which caused quite a stir in their day, in particular colours like teal, green, orange and burgundy. There was also a strong use of graphic lines,” says Lloyd.

“With a traditional palette, the aim is to use all of the colours to achieve one obvious harmony, but I wanted to create a palette where you really could play with the contrasts of just a pair of colours, or perhaps a trio,” he says. “With this palette you can either go for a clash by using your pair or trio of colours as perhaps a base colour, a shading colour and a highlight colour, or you can just simplify and use one shade, with the highlighter for under the eye.”

Fans of the Full Metal Shadows will be delighted to learn that the formula comes in a matte texture. The metallic liquid eyeshadows can last up to 16 hours thanks to the 30% concentration of pigment and 40% pure water solution. Choose from a vintage green, suede plum or velvet beige.

There are several options for the lips. Make an entrance with an intense Rouge Pur Couture The Mats lipstick in Decadent Pink, Alternative Plum or Orange Seventies. Simmonds describes the texture as “stretch-leather” which locks colour in place but retains a sensual, velvety-smooth finish.

“On Cara, I just used the vintage green from the palette, and then contrasted it with a straight graphic line. I used a line under the eye to balance her look an dthe darkness of the crease colour. On her lips is Rouge Couture The Mats in Orange Seventies.
