YSL’s Savage Escape 2016
YSL Creative Director of Makeup, Lloyd Simmonds, is taking a road trip along Route 66 this summer. The desert scenery and colours have inspired him to create YSL’s limited edition summer makeup collection that arrives on counters this month. It’s called Savage Escape and Lloyd describes it like this, “Golden sands; billowing clouds, hot blue skies; a trail of brown dust in her wake. Burning up the road, not caring where she’s headed. Until the sun goes down.” Of course, the perfect model to illustrate this mood is twenty-three year-old Cara Delevingne. She stars in the ad campaign visual and video.
The star product of the collection is the Les Sahariennes Bronzing Stones that promises a healthy-looking bronzed glow that feels truly weightless on the skin. In a departure from traditional powder-manufacturing methods, this bronzer uses micro-milling machinery for an all-in-transparency result. It feels weightless on skin. The powder itself is composed of ultra-fine pigments manufactured to maximize the synergy between colour and texture. This allows for pure colour to be released, giving a brightening and smoothing effect simultaneously. Light enhancing agents add to a luminous finish, while squalane imparts moisture.
“This is the finest milled powder I’ve ever seen,” explains Simmonds. “A fresh-looking finish gives skin a naturally healthy glow. An innovation.” There are three shades available:
Les Sahariennes Bronzging Stones in No 1 Sunstone
Les Sahariennes Bronzging Stones in No 2 Fire Opal
Les Sahariennes Bronzging Stones in No 3 Jasper
No YSL makeup collection would be complete without a Couture Collector Palette. This one is called Savage Escape and will undoubtedly sell out quickly. The eyeshadow shades ties the bright blue of a hot summer horizon to the dusky browns and pinks of the sunset hitting the desert. The compact cover revisits the colour of sun-bleached blue jeans interpreted in a suede-like finish. The iconic YSL “Cassandre” logo is emblazoned in rose gold.
“When I created this compact, I thought of a girl in beat-up car, waking up in the desert; wearing blue jeans; in love with the colours of dawn. It’s about freedom; it’s about the ease of summer; it’s about not being complicated,” says Lloyd.
You’ll find two new shades of the Full Metal Shadow promising 16 hours of colour pay-off. It’s the same high pigment water-based solution that can be applied easily with just a stroke of the applicator.
Full Metal Shadow in No 11 Bonnie Copper
This gorgeous gold can be applied all over the lid or teamed with navy blue for a dramatic effect.
Full Metal Shadow in No 12 Blue Clyde
A fresh, uplifting blue that creates a fashionable look in seconds.
For lips, there are two new shades of Gloss Volupte.
Gloss Volupte in No 54 Aurora Pink
This pale pink is perfect when paired with a dramatic eye.
Gloss Volupte in No 55 Rose Eldorado
This vibrant pink contains ruby undertones.
Nails are painted a deep blue or a pale rose hue.
La Laque Couture in No 71 Savage Pink
La Laque Couture in No 72 Night Escape
Couture Skin Jewels
Beauty companies did surprisingly well with temporary tattoos last year so YSL has introduced three deluxe temporary tattoo sheets. Wear them wherever you like.
So how did Simmonds create Cara’s dramatic eye look in the ad campaign? “I used the Full Metal Shadows, which I personally feel are a great modern way to do eye makeup. You take a swipe of the sponge applicator using the gold along the roots of the lash on the top lid, then smudge with your fingers, and leave to dry. To get a strong sense of contrast, I did the same thing on the lower lashes, using the blue shade. Add mascara and that’s it! What I love about this look is that you don’t need to be a makeup artist to do it, and yet it is still directional.”
YSL Beauté is available at select Hudson’s Bay stores and thebay.com
