When it comes to the ultimate in luxury shoe design and beauty packaging, there is one name that rules supreme: Christian Louboutin. Mr. Louboutin is a French fashion designer whose prestige stiletto footwear features a high-shine red lacquer sole beloved by such celebrity fans as Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey and Madonna.

His is a fascinating story as he was expelled from school three times as a child. And while academics didn’t appeal to him, he loved to sketch fashion illustrations. He claims an interview with Sophia Loren’s sister turned his life around. In it, she admitted that she left school at age 12 like Christian, but returned at age 50 and earned her degree. He began to research shoe design and silhouettes while working backstage at the Folies Bergeres. Soon he was a fixture on the Paris club scene partying with Andy Warhol and Mick Jagger.

Here is where his story gets interesting. He collected a portfolio of shoe designs and mustered the courage to approach couture houses looking for work. Roger Vivier saw his designs and took him on as his apprentice. His career took off from there. He would go on to freelance for Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent before opening his own salon in 1991. Princess Caroline of Monaco was his first client.

Christian’s foray into beauty was more recent. He introduced his first nail lacquer in 2012, in his signature red shade. They sold out immediately causing a frenzy. He has since expanded into lip lacquer, mascara and fragrance. Here are two of my favourite Christian Louboutin Beauty products.

The formula is creamy yet lightweight texture glides on seamlessly to dress the lips in brilliant colour. It’s housed in an amphora-shaped package with a black ribbon to be worn as a necklace. It’s part makeup, part fashion accessory.
