YSL’s Creative Director of Makeup, Tom Pecheux, shares insider stories
on the creation of the brand’s joyful spring colour collection, “Shimmer Rush”.
celebrity makeup artist Tom Pecheux
Dave: Tell us about the look for this new campaign? What was your inspiration?
Tom Pecheux: Staz is a great musician and singer, and so we imagined her singing at a festival on the west coast of America, with the sun setting and enjoying the energy and freedom that comes with performing. I played with the bold pink shades, applying it on the eyes and creating rosy cheeks. A little eyeshadow near the lashes and on the mobile eyelid gave a sense of shimmer. And some eyeliner to add a little rockstar glamour – because after all, she is Staz.
DL: Where did you get your ideas for the new collection?
TP: The YSL Beauté woman is not a stereotype – she’s very versatile, very rich in her point of view, never stuck with one look, or in one place. She’s a fashion icon who likes to play around. After Fall’s very sophisticated look, I wanted to create something fresh, light and happy for spring. It’s makeup that makes you feel feminine, young, pretty.
YSL Shimmer Rush All-Over Palette
DL: Tell us about the All-Over Palette?
TP: These colours suit every skin tone, they’re subtle, gentle, but can be made more dramatic with the shimmering eyeliners in the collection. The lilac shimmer shade – a blue-pink colour – continues on from Fall’s very deep lilac, and works just as well on very pale skins as it does on dark skin. There’s a lot of “no makeup makeup” out there at the moment, but the YSL Beauté woman is a woman who loves makeup. This is a flawless palette with a point of view, that’s subtle but also discreet.
DL: How would you apply the lip and cheek colours?
TP: With your fingers – they warm up the product and it blends very easily. On the lips it’s almost like a stain, like the perfect leftovers from lipstick after you’ve just been kissed.

DL: What’s a quick evening look to do with the eyeshadows in the palette?
TP: Using just the palette, the eyes will never feel overdone. So if you want to make them a little more dramatic, you will definitely need to introduce another item, which can be as simple as a lot of mascara, or a liquid eyeliner. The eyeshadows in this palette are designed to be soft, shimmery, playful and gentle – not too grown up.
DL: How would you describe the Face Palette?
TP: It’s a lovely friend. A palette which will bring you joy, happiness, colour, glow, health, it will make you look awake, and feel rested! Apply it with a pretty large brush in big round strokes. Put it on the apples of your cheeks if you’re feeling a little under the weather, and with the leftovers on the brush, sweep it all over the face.
YSL Couture Eyeliner
DL: Do you have any tips for how to get a straight line with Couture Eyeliner?
TP: Start your eyeliner from the inside corner of the eye and take it to the outside corner, pressing a little bit more when you arrive there, because it’s here that the liner needs to be a bit broader. Now stop. The second part is to draw the wing. Think of your eyeliner in these two parts, with a break in the middle and it will be easier. And never be discouraged. A perfect eyeliner needs plenty of practise. And have lots of those very tiny Q tips by your side – they’re your best friend!

DL: How do you wear the sugar almond shades of Volupté Liquid Colour Balm?
TP: They are like marshmallow colours, aren’t they? Very transparent and shiny, playful, friendly and young. Because they are sheer they are actually very easy to wear and go with everything. Everyone loves a sweet pastel colour.
