Two of the biggest fragrance trends for autumn 2019 come from tiny white blooms with big personalities. Neroli, the scent from the bitter orange tree and tuberose are appearing in numerous luxe fragrance launches this season. And that is good news for those who love white florals with character. Here’s a little backstory on the trend.

scent trend: neroli

Neroli has been used in perfumery for centuries. It’s the essential oil of the bitter orange tree flower which is extracted through a process of steam distillation. It’s scent is sweet and honeyed with a little kick of spice and green notes. The ingredient, while a favourite of perfumers, is said to be the secret ingredient in Coca Cola.) The blossoms are handpicked in late April to early May when the blossoms are most fragrant. You’ll find the largest bitter orange tree orchards in Tunisia and Morocco. Southern Italy is also a big producer. (Here’s a link to read more about neroli.)

Italian jewelry brand Bvlgari is introducing an elegant neroli-inspired fragrance this season called “Wood Neroli”. It’s a fresh woody-floral with notes of bergamot, neroli, salt crystals accord, cypress, white cedar wood, orange blossom absolute, musks, ambrox and mineral amber accord. I’ve found it smells beautiful on men and women. The scent was actually inspired by the clear Mediterranean light.

Like the bitter orange tree flower, tuberose is a tiny white floral with a bold character. (Think of it as the Celine Dion of flowers.) It has a creamy , velvety floral scent that was popular in the 1970s and is now enjoying a renaissance. This happens when one or two master perfumers use it in a perfume that becomes a global success. Other brands look at the success and suddenly ask for scents with that note. Ralph Lauren Woman used strong tuberose ingredients and sold very well as did Givenchy L’Interdit. During Victorian times, young girls were forbade smelling this flower as it was considered too sexy.

It’s interesting to note that Polianthes tuberosa doesn’t have any botancial relation to roses, despite the name. It has more in common with jasmine or gardenia than rose. A single bouquet of tuberose can scent a large room for several days – that is how powerful they are. The flowers are picked while still in bud so that they can give off their most alluring scent as the flowers wilt.

Bvlgari has taken a unique approach to the tuberose trend by picking the buds in the evening. Flowers give off slightly different fragrances throughout the day – something that perfumers discovered. Tuberose has a more alluring and sensual character at night. So this became the inspiration for Splendida Tubereuse Mystique. It’s a seductive white floral with notes of Davana essence, blackcurrant buds, Twilight Tuberose, vanilla and myrrh resin. The bottle is inky blue to represent twilight.

THE GIVEAWAY: I gave away this set of Bvlgari Wood Neroli and Splendida Tubereuse Mystique to one lucky reader. To enter, I asked readers to tell me in a blog comment below which fragrance appeals to them most. Mary Helen T told use and we drew her name at random. Congrats Mary Helen!

Wow! Incredible stories! Thanks for sharing those lovely backstories about 2 very popular additions to fragrances and perfumes right now. I love both scents, to be quite honest. But the story of how the tuberose has a different fragrance when picked at different times of day and night, and that it once was considered too sexy for young girls to even smell the flower, my pick is going to be tuberose. I especially like how they used tuberose that had been picked at midnight. It gives the fragrance more appeal and mystical. And I’m not a floral fragrance person, normally! But just hearing all the things that have to be just right for this little flower to give off so much fragrance is truly amazing! Love this, Dave! Thanks for sharing, again, and thanks for the chance to win these brilliant fragrances. Hope you had a great weekend and wish you a wonderful week! Big hugs and tons of love, xoxoJJ
