Alex Box is one of the world’s top makeup artists. She’s renowned for her immense creativity and vision regularly working with Vogue, Numero, W, i-D, Dazed and Confused and Stylist. Her celebrity clients have included Lady Gaga, Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Courtney Love. I first learned about Alex thanks to her backstage makeup work for Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and Chanel. I then had the pleasure of meeting her in Toronto when she came to help launch the Illamasqua brand in Canada a couple years ago. She was instrumental in shaping the brand’s imagery, creative vision and product development until parting ways with the brand in September 2015.

I remember I was struck at how humble and soft spoken she was. She was meeting with press in a private room at Hudson’s Bay’s flagship store and she was incredibly sweet. You could see her looking around at the people on the street, the architecture and listening to the music playing. Later that day, she demonstrated her art completely making over two models in a harlequin design. She almost went into a trance while working. It was remarkable to watch.

So it was such a surprise to see a mysterious message from her on May 5th on my Twitter account. Here’s what she wrote.
I sent her a note asking her to explain her project. I wanted to make sure it was appropriate for my followers. She told me she has created a collection of 50 creative “touchstone” cards to spur on anyone’s creativity and solve creative blocks.
“I want to help people in those moments where they need inspiration or change of direction, or even just encouragement from a friendly voice,” she said.
I received this package in the mail from London this week.
Here is the card I received that Alex picked at random.
The full deck of “The Alex Box” of cards comes in a neat box of 50. You simply shuffle the deck and pick a card a random to give you inspiration and a spark of creativity. It’s a wonderful way to think “outside the box” (pun intended)
“The Alex Box of Cards” is available for preorder now at thealexbox.com
