MAC Cosmetics Senior Artist Caitlyn Callahan may work backstage during fashion weeks in Paris, Milan, New York and London, but that doesn’t mean she can’t relate to real customers. “I think so many women get comfortable with their favourite shades, then get a little scared to move outside these colours.” So we asked her to give us the best complementary shades.
- Like that: MAC lipstick in Ruby Woo
This very matte vivid blue-red was made famous by Rihanna, who wears it everywhere.
Try this: MAC lipstick in Snob
“This light neutral pink in a satin finish looks beautiful on tanned skin,” says Callahan. “But it also looks great during early spring. It adds some life to your complexion. I often use it as a blush or a stain.” She says this is the hottest lipstick shade in Brazil. “We can’t keep it in stock.”
- Like that: MAC Lipglass in Oyster Girl
“Oyster girl is a fresh water pink gloss that is one of our bestsellers. It really does look good on almost everyone.”
Try this: MAC lipglass in Ravaging
“Ravaging is more opaque but has a similar pastel tone to Oyster Girl. This shade has more warmth to it with a little apricot and peach undertone. “This will look great from winter right through spring. It’s so versatile.”
- Like that: MAC Eyeshadow in Sketch
“Our best-selling eyeshadow in a rich maroon shade. Purple flatters almost every eye colour. It’s foolproof.”
Try this: MAC Mineral Shadow in Young Punk
“I love that this shadow has threads of colour through it. That allows you to go lighter or darker depending on what look you want. I like to wet my brush with Fix+ to increase the intensity of colour. It gives you even more options from one shadow.” She says you can apply with a soft brush or a stiff brush, wet or dry.
- Like that: MAC Nail Lacquer in Midnight Storm
“I find that this shade of dark cranberry is a favourite of my clients. It works in so many different situations.”
Try this: MAC Studio Nail in Obsessed
“The ruby shades in this glittering top coat really catch the light. You can paint it over another nail lacquer shade or wear it on its own. I use it on my nails and toes.”
- Like that: MAC Studio Fix Foundation
“If you are looking for a foundation with really good coverage, Studio Fix is for you.”
Try that: MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation
“Changing your foundation from a compact to a fluid can instantly give you a more natural look while still providing the coverage you want. I find that this is particularly important when taking photos.”

March 25, 2023 at 1:31 pmI must say, I am a sucker for sticking with something I am familiar with. It’s easy and it becomes routine. But this article is great as it has motivated me to be more adventurous.
