Celebrity makeup artist Francois Nars is celebrating the 25th anniversary of his eponymous makeup brand with 72 iconic lipsticks shades.
In the world of social media where beauty creators document, stream and post their lives 24 hours per day, Francois Nars is an oddity. The reclusive makeup artist is rarely seen in public preferring to let his products take centre stage. In fact, he’s more comfortable in a research and development lab then hosting public events or master classes.
I had the pleasure of speaking with him for an hour on the phone years ago and I can tell you he is gentle, sweet and thoughtful. And he clearly likes to laugh a lot. Passionate about his makeup formulas, he emphasizes the importance of enjoying the moment and the power of spending time with good friends. He’s clearly figured out what is important to him in life and he’s living that life.
It was 25 years ago that Barney’s in New York City first stocked 12 Nars lipsticks in the matte black packaging. Francois had been working backstage at fashion shows and on set with the top fashion magazines. So he clearly knew what worked and what didn’t. Naomi Campbell credits him with custom blending foundation shades that worked on her skin. And the subsequent peachy-pink-gold blush called Orgasm made him a household name.
With dozens of artistic collaborations and several books to his name, Francois is marking the 25th anniversary with a nod to where it all started. He’s relaunching his iconic lipstick collection with some new colours and fan favourites. The formula has been updated to moisturize lips with a lightweight feel and strong pigment. I know that he sent dozens of prototypes back to the labs until he got the exact texture and colour vibrancy he wanted. Here’s to another 25 years, Francois!
