July 5, 2023 at 10:09 pmToday would have been my mom’s 75th birthday. I’m starting to forget what she looked like, so I did something today I think would have made you smile, Dave! She used to only wear Oscar de la Renta perfume and one other kind. That “other” kind was a perfume my dad found in the Bahamas, at a duty free store while he was stuffing mine and my sisters’ suitcases with duty free, 20 year old Macallan scotch. I remember the bottle more than the scent. It was SO pretty! The top was this beautiful, ornate flower, and the rest of the bottle was so elegant! My mom absolutely LOVED it! The next time my dad went down there, he bought every single bottle. I wish I knew what that perfume was so badly! But since I don’t know, and I don’t want to further torment my father more than I already have, I did another scent memory test with her old Oscar de la Renta perfume instead. It’s the old fat bottle one, with a curved top, and the minute I smelled it, I saw her beautiful smile! It was better than an acid trip down scent memory lane. I could smell her, and I could see her, and that is such a rare gift! She was just like me in how she HATED being photographed! My dad on the other hand IS a photographer, and I have a black and white picture he took of her when she was younger than I am now, when they were on holiday in London. That’s usually the only face I see when I try to remember her. But because I have the nose of a blood hound, the old perfume took my brain way back down memory lane, and I could see ALL of her, not just her face! And it was wonderful! I wish I could see and feel her like that all the time. I just really miss her. Mother’s Day, holidays, anniversaries, and today have always been extremely difficult for me. My sisters seem to be okay with it. But that’s the thing about grief; it’s different for everyone. Thanks so much for sharing this, Dave! It’s what gave me the idea in the first place!
