60-Second highlighting: The fastest way to update your look this season is to highlight your complexion. Here’s how to create a professional look in no time.

“Highlighting or strobing involves using light or shimmering products to accentuate features on the face,” explains Giorgio Armani Beauté Regional Trainer Joanne Black. “Placing these products in certain areas will bring them forward and create a more three- dimensional look to your makeup.

 

Black recommends starting with a luminous foundation to create a subtle, all-over glow.

“Highlighting can be done subtly with lighter-coloured concealer or foundation,” she says. “Place under the eye to brighten, on the cheekbone or under the brow bone for a more “day friendly or professional” look.” For this, simply choose a product that is lighter than your skin tone and use in the areas you want to brighten.

“Be sure to blend seamlessly with a brush or sponge into the rest of your foundation. This is the key to a polished look.”

For a more intense “strobe” effect, use a product with more shimmer or “glow”. Focus on the high planes of the face and features you want to stand out. “I like to blend product on to the upper cheekbone and continue around the occipital bone so that you have highlighted under and just over the brow area.You can also create more dimension by highlighting down the centre of the nose, being careful to avoid the tip.”

One of her favourite tips is to place a highlighting product around the lip edges before applying lipstick or gloss to create a fuller pout. “Remember, products with high shimmer should be used strategically, not all over, to avoid looking oily.” And use powders with a luminous but not frosted finish instead of matte to set your makeup.
