YSL’s “Street & I” Spring 2017 Collection
For spring 2017, Lloyd Simmonds, Creative Director of Makeup at YSL is taking to the streets…literally. He studied graffiti art in Los Angeles, Paris, New York, London and Shanghai and observed how women are expressing themselves through art and fashion. He then translated that into an edgy and colourful limited edition makeup collection that arrives on counters this month.
The star product is the Face Palette Collector – I Have A Blush On You that is best described as a colourful crush of orange blush. Sweep it on for a hint of youthful colour or layer for a bold fashion look. The compact itself will sell out in days thanks to the graffiti-style design.
Complementing the blush palette is one for eyes called “Couture Palette Collector – Keep An Eye On Me.” What I like about Lloyd is he pairs unexpected colours in his palettes. These aren’t shades you’d immediately think to wear together – but once you see them on someone, the effect is forward and edgy. This particular palette features grey, pinks and oranges meant to intrigue the urban artist. A shimmering pale pink was created to bring light under the brow; a hard city grey for lining or creating a smoky eye; a flash of orange and duo of pinks to add a ‘pop’ of interest.
Ask any YSL pro makeup artist and they’ll tell you one of their favourite products is the Dessin Du Regard eye pencils. Instantly sharpen your line, smudge and blend where needed. Apply each shade by itself, or with its partner to create a strong opaque mono-colour. Or go for a harmony of pink teamed with urban anthracite.

Here is a secret of pro makeup artists: a white eye pencil. It instantly creates a wide-open eye effect that is luminous and ultra-graphic.

When I’ve interviewed New York Beauty Directors, invariably their list of favourite products includes YSL Rouge Volupte Shine. This season, there are four new shades that are designed to be mixed and matched.
No. 57 in Rouge Spencer, a vibrant rose-red
No. 58 in Orange Tournon, a high-velocity orange
No. 59 in Fuchsia Jumpsuit, a pop-art pink
No. 60 in Rose Marceau, a fresh coral
Adding a dab of Gloss Volupte lip gloss will instantly add dimension to your lip colour.
No. 211 Acrylic Pink, a high-octane fuchsia
No. 212 Orange Granite, a tangy orange
Simmonds has always paid special attention to the final details of any makeup look: nail lacquer. And spring 2017 is no exception. This month he plays with contrasts: orange and asphalt grey.
No. 81 in Vandal Orange
No. 82 in Asphalt Grey
La Laque Couture No. 80 Blanc Arty
A shock of white, what could be more unexpected? It’s an ultra-fresh and polished look that balances the pinks and oranges in the lip and eye makeup.
