Chin Up!

Chin Up! If you’re noticing some sagging skin of the chin and neck, don’t despair. Here are some tips and formulas to tackle the problem and look great at any age.

The problem: sagging skin of the chin and neck

The cause: Collagen, elastin and laminin proteins provide critical support to skin structure. As we age, these structural proteins break down and cells begin to produce less of them.

Accelerated breakdown: Environmental aggressors such as UV, pollution and ozone depletion amp up free radical production. These further breakdown the proteins resulting in sagging skin. Without a strong foundation, skin quickly sags.

Perceived aging: A recent Estee Lauder five year Age Measurement Study revealed that skin sagging alone determines nearly 30% of how old a Caucasian woman looks. That number jumps to 50% for Japanese women.

Light dims: “As a woman reaches mid-life and her skin support structure weakens, she not only experiences sagging, but also experiences a significant loss of light in her skin. This causes her skin to lose its radiance and youthful glow,” says Dr. Nadine Pernodet, Ph.D., Executive Director of Skin Biology, Research & Development, The Estee Lauder Companies.

First line of attack: Wear a broad spectrum sunscreen every day. This will shield skin cells from further UV damage and will permit the firming products to work at their optimum level.

What you need to know: North Americans have focused solely on the face for years in the fight against aging. But sagging and wrinkling at the chin level and below reveal a woman’s true age. New products designed for neck, chin, decolette and hands are specifically designed to fight the signs of aging.

The latest science: New targeted delivery systems allow chemists to deposit ingredients precisely with the skin’s layers. They can now make sure the cells responsible for producing structure proteins receive nourishing and activating ingredients. The latest advance is sirtuin technology that works with the natural activity of sirtuin “longevity genes” that generate energy to power all cellular activity. This in turn, powers the production of collagen and elastin fibres resulting in firmer-looking skin.

I am turning 48 on the 20th and I am starting to sag in places on my face and other places. I have always put product on my neck but never my decolette. I will be doing things differently from this day forward. Thank you Dave!
