A Master Perfumer at Work

Guerlain’s Thierry Wasser is among the top five master perfumers in the world. His understanding of the character and soul of an ingredient allows him to build complicated and nuanced fragrances for men and women. In fact, as he spends more and more time traveling around the world to secure the most luxurious and highest quality ingredients, his fragrances have become even more special. Take his latest project, Mon Guerlain. It ushers in a new scent trend: the Fresh Oriental. Here he shares some of his thoughts and his process of creating Mon Guerlain.

“Living raw materials possess an emotional dimension, as behind each ingredient are all the men and women who grew, picked, extracted and distilled them.” – Thierry Wasser

vanilla

“I discovered Tahitensis Vanilla during my travels in Papua New Guinea. It’s an enveloping, tender and sensual vanilla…almost maternal.”

lavender

“The Carla Lavender grown in the Drome in Provence is like no other. It’s pure, fresh and surprising in its simplicity and authenticity. It combines the masculine and feminine genres which is very modern.”

sambac jasmine

“ To reveal a truly delicate femininity, I chose sambac jasmine which is harvested at dawn. It’s delicate and voluptuous.”

“Writing a perfume formula is like writing a score of music. It is how you combine the notes that makes a fragrance sing.”

“The haute perfumery industry is becoming more and more competitive. I spend much of my time traveling around the world meeting with farmers and trying to secure the best raw ingredients.”

Notes: Carla Lavender, Sambac Jasmine, Tahitensis Vanilla & Australian Sandalwood

Australian sandalwood provides the strength and mystery to the fragrance.

guerlain perfumesHeritage: Guerlain has created 1100 perfumes since 1828. Jacques Guerlain would say, “the creation of a fragrance is a work of emotion and intuition.”

Theme: A fragrance worn like an invisible tattoo

The muse: Angelina Jolie

Charitable heart: Jolie has pledged to donate all her earnings from this scent to charity.

guerlain displayBottle design: The legendary Guerlain flacon is capped with a quadrilobe stopper. The quadrilobe bottle was actually designed by Gabriel Guerlain in 1907 to be streamlined, understated and graphic. The stopper recalls the shape of a four-leaf clover, a symbol of happiness and luck in France. This perfume is sealed just like a champagne bottle.
